Back in January we had the pleasure of attending the University of York’s Northern Youth Fashion Show, with special guest Anna Wintour.
British Anna has been the editor in chief of American Vogue since 1988, and we were so excited to see her trademark bob and sunglasses in real life.
Anna appeared in an absolutely stunning two piece in front of a totally packed audience, before talking about her career and facing a Q&A session.
Ms Wintour talked a lot about social media, which we found really inspiring.
“You don’t want to spend your entire life clicking and liking.
I’m struck these days by how often people come up to me and ask to take a photograph, instead of shaking hands, meeting one’s eyes and having an actual conversation.
Even at the shows, people are so busy documenting the moment, they forget to actually look at the clothes in front of them.
Social media is great but don’t let it be a substitute for living.”
We completely agree with this and although Team Meiji Designs love instagramming, our real passion is doing what we love with dye and fabric in the studio.
We also fell in love with Ms Wintour’s honesty and wit. When one of the audience members asked “how would you suggest you cultivate your own style?”, the fashion mogul replied “look in the mirror.”
And of course we couldn’t attend a fashion show without taking something along! We donated a matching scarf and pocket square set to the raffle.
The event, organised by University of York students, was in aid of refugee charities and supporting the York Food Bank. We’ll leave you with a final word from Anna.
“I urge everyone here to remember how important it is, at whatever stage of life, to get outside of yourself and your own ambitions and to think about how to help those who are less fortunate.”
